DSL
1. What does DSL stand for?
Digital Subscriber Line
2. What exactly is DSL?
DSL (Digital Subcriber Line ) is a technology for bringing high-bandwidth
information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copper
telephone lines. xDSL Refers to different variations of DSL, such
as ADSL, HDSL and SDSL. The higher bandwidth allows you to receive
data at rates up 6.1 megabits per second enabling continuous transmission
of video and audio.
3. Are there different kinds of DSL?
Yes. ADSL, HSDL, IDSL, VDSL VIPowerNet currently offers SDSL (symmetric
digital subcriber line ) ADSL (Asymmetrical digital line) in the
next 2-4 months.
4. What are the differences between ADSL and SDSL?
SDSL offers the same speeds in both directions( data uploading and
downloading) ADSL offers different speeds in each direction ( faster
download speed than uploading.) With ADSL you can still receive
phone calls on the same line. SDSL requires a second line.
5. What are the qualifications for DSL service ?
Right now the only restriction is your distance from your telephone
company's nearest central office. You must be 18,000 feet or closer
to a central office. DSL speeds are based on distance.
6. What hardware/software is needed?
On the customer's end, a working computer with Win95,98, NT, or Windows
for Workgroups 3.11, CD-ROM drive, Web Browser, and a Network Card.
The telco will supply the DSL modem, and instructions as necessary.
7. Can I get DSL over my existing phone line?
With ADSL – yes (later this year). With SDSL - no. SDSL needs
a separate copper pair phone line. ADSL can use your existing phone
line.
8. What are the differences between DSL and dial-up service?
Speed: SDSL speeds range from 192K to 1168K while your modem's maximum
speed is 56K. SDSL is approximately 20 times faster. Connection
is always on , no need for dialing in. Limitless number of computers
can share a single Internet access simultaneously.
9. What about security?
DSL modems have built-in security options that are easy to implement.
For example, these options prevent "hackers" from gaining
access to your computers. Optionally, customers may add other security
software such as Norton Security 2000.
